Going to College or Not — Educational insight; not academic advising

Posted 4/11/2026

Throughout my life, I noticed that almost every job I tried to apply for they said I was “inexperienced,” except for the work I did in the military. Over time, I learned that it is much harder to become financially stable without a college education. I also realized that education protects you — people cannot take advantage of you as easily when you understand the world, understand systems, and understand your rights.

Some of the best moments in my life were when I was learning something new, whether it was online college, in‑person classes, or training programs. Even though college can be expensive, sometimes grants and financial aid make it possible. Education has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. I met people who helped me grow, and the groups I participated in gave me confidence and purpose. Many tutors made a lasting impact on my life, and that is why I still believe teachers, librarians, and tutors play an important role in shaping people’s futures.

I also think about the opportunities I missed by not going to college earlier — such as becoming an officer in the military or qualifying for higher ranks. There were many promotions I couldn’t get simply because I didn’t have enough college credits. Even when I feel down or discouraged, I can look back at my educational journey and feel proud. God gave me the ability to learn and earn a degree despite my learning limitations. I believe that making progress every day, even small progress, is the real key to success.
