Before I joined the military, I didn’t have direction or a clear understanding of the adult world. Military service changed that. It taught me that some people will try to bring you down to get ahead, while others will lift you up and support you. I learned that not every relationship is healthy, and not everyone has good intentions. At the same time, I met leaders who genuinely cared about their soldiers and supported them in meaningful ways.
Serving in the military gave me structure and stability. I always had a place to stay, three meals a day, a fitness routine, and reliable health and dental care. Some of these benefits extended to my immediate family, such as a spouse or child. I know other jobs offer strong benefit packages too, but the feeling of supporting others and contributing to something bigger than myself was worth more than gold.
The military gave me a new environment and helped me grow. The support I gave to others was priceless, and it reminded me that we are not here on this earth just for ourselves — we are here to contribute. Joining the military was a major learning experience for me. I also recognize that there are many other ways to serve, such as volunteering, community work, or careers that help people in need.
